What to Look for When Choosing a Gynecologist

A gynecologist is a woman’s health specialist providing women of all ages with total health care, including preventive care.
Comprehensive gynecological care can include options for contraception, assistance with conception and infertility treatment for heavy bleeding, PMS, fibroids and other reproductive disorders, and help through menopause.

Gynecologists who also care for women during pregnancy and childbirth are called obstetrician/gynecologists (OB/GYNs).
There have been a number of advancements in women’s health care over the years, and it is important to choose a board certified gynecologist who has experience with these newer technologies and procedures.

Robotic Surgery for Gynecology

Da Vinci robotic surgery has made it possible for women to have complex gynecologic surgeries without an open incision and without the limitations of traditional laparoscopy.  A gynecologist proficient on the da Vinci platform can perform complex procedures such as hysterectomy, myomectomy, and endometriosis resection with reduced risk and downtime as well as better precision, control and dexterity.

The da Vinci robotic platform can also be used to correct pelvic prolapsed or reverse a tubal ligation.

Endometrial Ablation

Many of the newer endometrial ablation techniques can be done right in the gynecologist’s office, sparing patients a hospital stay.  These procedures are used to correct excessive bleeding and work by destroying the endometrial lining of the uterus.
Endometrial ablation can now be done through a variety of techniques, including electrosurgery, cryoablation (extreme cold), heated saline, microwave energy, and radiofrequency energy.

Permanent Birth Control

Female sterilization can also be done by either tubal ligation (cutting and tying off the tubes permanently), or with newer incision-free transcervical sterilization techniques like Essure and Adiana.
With Essure, coils composed of fiber and metal are inserted into the fallopian tubes through the vagina.  As scar tissue grows around the coils, it blocks the passage of sperm.

Adiana works much the same way only using silicone.
